7 Ways to Style the White Shirt

A white shirt is the perennial style classic

Cool and crisp – A white shirt is the perennial style classic. It’s one of the most versatile pieces you can own and its tailored shape brings elegance to distressed denim and conservative suiting alike.

Here are a few of our favourite combinations:

Brighten up with Bold Prints

Enliven your white shirt ensemble with a bold pattern or print. Graphic prints are big news for Spring/Summer 2016 (just take a look at Sana Safinaz’s latest PFDC presentation) so this is an easy way to work the trend. And remember: be as adventurous as you like – nothing clashes with a white shirt.

It’s a Jolly Holiday with Audrey

During her Roman Holiday, Audrey Hepburn kept it prim and proper as she skipped around the Spanish steps. Check out her rolled sleeves and turned-up collar – the height of sharp femininity and elegance.

Make a Statement

This season is all about finding luxe versions of the classics, thus it’s no surprise that the humble white shirt featured heavily in the spring/summer shows. As ever, it’s about rejuvenation and the piece has been taken to extremes. From frill-mania at Chanel, to puff-sleeve perfection at Michael Kors and pretty ruffles at Paul & Joe, it’s the ultimate forever piece.

Make it Monochrome

Let your shirt do all the talking by keeping things simple in a monochrome outfit. Opt for black or dark navy bottoms and accessories to accompany your cool white shirt.

Keep it Neutral with Bold Accessories

If you want your statement accessories, such as brightly coloured shoes or a leopard print stole to pop, then it’s best to keep the rest of your outfit neutral. Style your white shirt with pastels, creams and whites to allow accessories to take centre stage.

Pair it with Denim

There is little that doesn’t go well with a pair of jeans, so it’s little surprise that the white shirt is no exception. Tuck your favourite blouse into a pair of jeans or denim skirt, then finish off the look with some head-turning heels. Opt for this season’s flared denim jeans or a lighter, bleached look for the summer months.

Add Edgy Details

Leather details via a motorcycle jacket, wrap-around studded platforms or a studded skirt make the classic white button-down shine in a new fashion-forward light.
