Small portions of food, a tiny cramped space and the idea of jalapenos in your drink might make one turn up their nose at this new Karachi eatery, but wait till you have a seat. Loco is one visual treat. Serving Spanish “tapas” or snacks, for the very first time in Pakistan, are three friends who started this joint, one of whom is loved Masterchef Pakistan alum, Rayyan Durrani.
Loco opened its doors almost two weeks ago at what promises to be Karachi’s swankiest new restaurant strip – Bukhari commercial. Their small space which seats 28-30 people at most, makes for a cosy, stylish setting. Our favourite features here are the bold patterned floor tiling, and the gigantic mural painted on a brick wall. Another design element that we appreciate is the front window, which opens directly into the kitchen. This massively adds to the charm of this space – there’s always something intimate about restaurants that allow you to watch your food get cooked.
What impressed us though was the quality of the food. Fresh and unique flavours dominate the menu, which offers everything from pasta and brick oven pizza to ceviche and steak. The dishes might be small but boast of strong flavours and unique variety. When you visit make sure you try their best sellers – the Beef Tacos, Ceviche – raw fish cured in citrus juices and the Gambas al Plancha – juicy tiger prawns flame grilled with garlic orange and parsley. And you might love or hate the Jalapeno cucumber margarita, but you can’t leave the place without trying it.
