We’ve seen glitter makeup make a strong runway appearance from golden eyes at YSL in LA, to Chanel’s sparkle in Rome, and just about every city in between. To grab people’s attention all you have to do is shimmer things up a bit. It’s easy for glitter beauty looks to go bad, so follow our expert tips for how to rock this trend without looking like a disco ball!
Glitter effect: light
For a subtle effect – as subtle as glitter can be, anyway – consider your complexion: silver shimmer works best on fair skin, gold on olive skin, and bronze on dark skin. Spread M.A.C. liquid adhesive over your entire lid and up to the brow bone, then brush a light coat of loose glitter on top. Trace over the lash line with a second coat of glitter for this gradient effect. Another understated way to wear shimmery eye color is with a gunmetal and silver glitter liquid liner applied only to your lash line. To make the glitter pop even more, create a cat-eye with liquid liner, and then top it off with a shimmery liquid line.
Glitter effect: medium
If the cat-eye is your go-to look, switch things up with a sweep of shimmery gold liner. At Creatures of the Wind, makeup artist Aaron de Mey drew a graphic, black cat-eye on each model, and then patted glitter just above it. For some, he went all the way to the brow bone – but for this version, he kept the sparkly line thinner and more wearable. We also loved the feathered cat-eyes created by MAC makeup artist Romero Jennings. Just use a liquid liner, such as MAC’s Superslick Liquid Eye Liner in Pure Show, to carefully apply golden flourishes. Pair with a swipe of matte lipstick for the perfect foil to the disco ball effect on your lids.
Glitter effect: heavy
At Delpozo, makeup artists heavily packed glitter onto the centers of the models’ lids, centering most of the pigment at the lash lines and then blending out the shimmer toward the brow bones. Reach for a bottle of high-shine sparkle to copy the look for your next night out. Another way of bringing sparkle realness is crystallised eyelashes. Use a liquid glitter eyeliner like Urban Decay Heavy Metal Eyeliner in Midnight Cowboy to paint lash tips. Warning: this look isn’t for the fainthearted!
