Top 15 Kurtas For September

This month is dedicated to all things cool and casual

By Mahvish Ahmed

Before we get down to our monthly ritual of talking about the best kurtas in town, let’s give ourselves a big round of applause for pulling through two Eids, a gazillion mehndis, shaadis, and dholkis in just over two months. Before the next round of the wedding season begins, make the most of your casual chic clothes.

September will be all about taking a breather from overly adorned joras. We shall concentrate on practical, casual, and cool numbers. Like the idea? Good!

Here are our top picks for the month.

An easy way to release those endorphins (the happy hormone) is to add some canary yellow in your life. Wear this cheerful number by Daaman with off white cropped pants and tan sandals for a casual day at the mall or a busy day at the office. Try a pair of silver hoops to add a bit of style to your look.

Laid back doesn’t usually mean day old PJs. Laid back sprinkled with some chic, is a match made in heaven and Generation nails the idea with these pretty matching separates. After all, what’s more comfortable than the good ol’ shalwar kurta? We love the styling with tan khussas and a tan tote. Wear this pair with silver hoops and silver metallic choorian.

When the day calls for a little more effort, but comfort is not something you want to compromise on, then go for this three piece ensemble in hues of green. It is hand embroidered and the traditional susi shalwar makes us love it even more. Go for neatly pulled back bun (or a braid), brown lipstick, and a few ethnic rings to complete your look.

They came. They saw. And they conquered. None of our trips to Dolmen Mall (sadly, they only stalk here for the time being) is complete without stalking the latest design. Sometimes, we buy in bulk and sometimes we just sulk, depending on our bank account’s health.

But you must head there and grab this kurta, stole, and the checkered pants!

The combo is to die for! And so is this minimalist one involving a high-low shirt and bright yellow loafers for a burst of colour!

Here’s a chic top for you to sport for a casual lunch at your favourite café. Pair this with navy blue sandals, white boot legged pants, and some cool sunnies!

This brand by Kanwal is all things boho! If you’re not afraid of wearing colors then say hola to Boheme! Tucked away in one of the many lanes (third to be precise) of Zamzama, Karachi, we’ve been eyeing this one for long.

Also check this long ethnic dress out, doesn’t it deserve a place in your wardrobe? It can be worn to work (if there isn’t any strict dress code), a formal event, or even for a day at the beach! Don’t forget to pair it with an equally boho fringed bucket bag and floppy straw hat!

Long kameez, anyone? YES please! Longer silhouettes are back in vogue (in case you didn’t know already which is shameful) and monochrome gives you loads of room to experiment with accessories. Pair this kurta with frayed skinnies, black (or white) loafers, and lots of chunky arm candy. You can go for a top knot or even a messy braid to look gorgeously hot while keeping it casual.

P.S. we love those extra long side slits!

How about sporting an outright floral orange number to tempt Autumn to come sooner? This kurta is utterly cute with its voluminous short sleeves and strings to tie a bow at the back. Stick to the look in the photo to look super stylish at work, or out and about on the streets.

Zara Shahjahan

Of course there are evenings when you need something more than just a lawn kurta. This ensemble from Zara Shahjahan’s latest collection of casual silks is ideal for a coffee evening at your in laws (or anyother family which gives you ‘those’ feels). Sport a red pout and a gold bracelet. That’s it, nothing else.

P.s. Do take a moment to appreciate the lacey hemline of the culottes!

A pale blue awami kurta with stripes and front pockets is all we need when getting dressed on a hot, hot jam packed day. It’s practical, comfortable, yet traditionally stylish. Pair it with white kicks (or kolhapuris) and skinnies for a perfect day time look.

This chevron summer jacket with a frayed hemline has our heart, as well as our approval. Better weather is coming ahead so this is indeed the best time to invest in this extra layer which will give you a flow-ey silhouette and hide those extra kilos too!

If you didn’t know that summer jackets are one of the hottest trends then you’d probably like to know that Mawra Hocane and Alia Bhatt agree on this trend.

How pretty is this tropical silk tunic in multicolored hues?! The sleeves with slits and strings add a playful element to the look. You can pair it with white raw silk boot cut pants and bright coloured heels to nail the evening look.

Okay, so this is actually a lounging suit (in other words, you can sleep in it), but we’ve personally tried this one on and it looks ah-mazing with white palazzo and a black choker. We almost chocked on our khushi ke aansoo after seeing the result in the mirror.
