We Tried These Totkas And They Totally Work

There are some people who pop a pill at the slightest achew. Then there are those who refuse to bow down to chemical substance even if they’re a mere inch away from their death bed. What if we tell you there is a way to beat those aches and pains without having to bombard your body with pills? Some of those tiny bullets can have less than desirable side effects in the long run.

Whether you’re a conspiracy theorist or just don’t like to take medication unnecessarily, these totkas have been handed down from generation to generation and work like a charm every time! 

For The Headache You Can’t Shake

Is the turning weather giving you a pounding head ache that just won’t seem to go away? Try this weird solution! 

Fill a tub with 8-10 inches of lukewarm water and dissolve ½ a cup of salt in it. Dip your feet for half an hour and feel that piercing pain melt away! 

For The Stabbing Ear Ache

Too much air travel or just that persistent cold causing piercing pain in the very depths of your ear? Here’s how you can say good riddance! 

Heat a tablespoon of olive oil, add 1 clove of coarsely chopped garlic to it, and let it burn. While still warm (but not burning hot), add 2 drops of the oil to the affected ear, staying on your side so the oil doesn’t come out. It is guaranteed to make you feel better within ten minutes! 

For Joint Pain

Young at heart but have the joints of an eighty year old? This paste and oil is better than KT Tape! 

Add a teaspoon of haldi (turmeric) with 2 teaspoons of ginger paste (made fresh) and heat the concoction together in 2 tablespoons of mustard oil till mildly hot. You don’t want it spattering all over your kitchen! Apply the warm salve to the joint that hurts, bandage, and leave overnight. Repeat for upto a week to relieve the pain and continue as needed. 

Mix 2-3 teaspoon of red chilli powder (laal mirch) with olive oil to make a paste. This can be applied to aching joints and left overnight with a bandage to cover it up. 

For Sore Muscles

Is your new workout routine leaving you feeling less than agile?

Warm a cup of coconut oil and add a quarter cup of freshly ground red chilli powder till it’s well combined. Leave for 24 hours before straining with a muslin cloth. The goop you’ve got left behind can be discarded, but store the oil in an airtight bottle and apply it to soothe sore muscles.  

For Tummy Aches & Nausea

Tired of that icky feeling you get every time you think of food? Here’s a simple solution that will bring back your appetite! 

Make a cup of light black tea, but hold the milk. Instead, squeeze half a lemon and sip slowly while warm. Alternatively, boil 2 cups of water with 1 teaspoon of saunf (aniseed) until it reduces to one cup. Add honey and a few sprigs of fresh mint and sip slowly. 

Remember, these are just totkas and though tried and tested by us, if your problem persists it’s best to consult a doctor. Nani is quite a pro at solving all our issues, but a medical degree is not something that she or Google can replace!
