Dadi’s Beauty Diary

Grandmothers are full of age old tried and tested beauty tips for perfect skin and shiny hair although sometimes it can feel a little bit like they want you to dip yourself in whatever is available in the kitchen! We’ve narrowed down the best of traditional beauty totkas for you to try this fall!

  1. The bridal treatment

Turmeric (haldi) has many skin benefits and it used in traditional ‘ubtan’ masks. Ubtan skin treatments are a must for brides in South Asian culture where a few months before the wedding the bride to be has a turmeric based paste applied to her face and body almost daily for bright and clear skin. No need to wait for nuptials! You can use this treatment any time! Take 2 tbsp gram flour, a pinch of turmeric, 2 tbsp each of milk and rose water, mix well and apply to skin until it dries. Wash off for healthy soft skin.

  1. Mud Masks

Fuller’s Earth, more commonly known to us as ‘multanimitti’  is an amazing natural clay mask that cleanses and tightens the skin. It’s also great for absorbing impurities and helping control oily skin. Multanimitti used to come in the form of a block that had to be dissolved in water over time but now is easily available as a powder that mixes instantly with water to form a paste you can apply to the face and let dry till it cracks. Mix some honey, lemon juice or tomato juice in the paste to moisturize your face and give it that extra glow.

  1. 3. Tan be gone

This traditional fix is something we’re all very familiar with from our school days when our mother’s would despair over our sunburnt skin! To get rid of unsightly tans mix 2tbsp freshly squeezed lemon juice with 1tsp of honey and apply the mix to the affected area. Leave it on for about 10 to 15 minutes and rinse. Lemon juice is acidic and acts as an exfoliator and the honey dilutes its effect and softens the skin. You can also cut a potato in half, grate it a bit until liquid appears on the surface and rub it on your face before rinsing with water.

  1. Get that glow

Besan (gram flour) is a staple of any desi kitchen (we’re sensing a pattern here) and its fans range from grandmothers to actresses with AishwaryaRai saying it’s part of her beauty routine. Besan is great for exfoliation and glowing supple skin. Mix besan with honey, milk or yoghurt to make a mask. Apply this on your face until it dries and wash off with lukewarm water.

  1. Pore Perfect

Big pores are the bane of perfect foundation application. They make skin look oily, let impurities settle in and cause acne. Get healthier looking skin by using egg yolks. Separate the yolk from the whites and apply it on your face. Wait until this dies and wash off with warm water with slow rubbing motions.Dry off to reveal tight skin and nearly invisible pores.

  1. The Universal Solution

Dahi (curd) is one of those blanket ingredients that can be used for most anything when it comes to natural beauty solutions. Put some cold curd in your hair for healthy and refreshing protein treatment for your hair. Or add some lemon juice to dahi and apply on your face for a rejuvenating pick me up.
