If you have been on the hunt for good coffee in the city, you can finally put it to rest. The fairly small coffee place – Coffee Wagera on Badar Commercial, near Sohny Sweets, has everything that you might require from such a joint. It may not be Pakistan’s answer to Starbucks but according to owner Mr. Mush Panjwani, it is ‘the only coffee shop in Pakistan.’
Once you enter the coffee shop, you will be greeted warmly by a smiling Mush, who occasionally works behind the counter as well. It is a recent, very welcome addition to Karachi’s ever-blooming food scenario. Mush came to Pakistan from Hong Kong six months ago and began working tirelessly to make his long-term dream of bringing a non-typical coffee place to Pakistan come true. You will find out upon visiting Coffee Wagera that it is anything but your run-of-the-mill coffee restaurant.
The first thing that will catch your eye is the line of workstations that are specifically designed to accommodate people who just want to sit and get to work. In fact, these are one of the most appealing aspects of this coffee shop. If you want a quiet place to enjoy a good cup of coffee with your hectic work routine, then this is where you should be heading to. Other than that, they also serve exclusively homemade snacks and fresh juices as well.
Since its self-service, as soon as you place the order, you get the Wi-Fi password and an empty glass for drinking water
On the Menu
It’s mostly a coffee-centric place that has been inspired by coffee shops one would usually find in the West. Mush says that the idea stemmed from his experiences traveling to various countries and cities where there are lots of coffee shops for people to relax. Rather than providing only to-go coffee, the founder/owner wanted a space where people didn’t just take their order with them but could sit for longer and have access to uninterrupted Wi-Fi service too.
Since the idea is to provide a hospitable and friendly environment to people on a budget, the first and foremost item given to people who walk in is water, which is completely free. As soon as you go up to place the order (it’s self-service), you get the Wi-Fi password and an empty glass for drinking water which you can keep on refilling throughout your meal without paying any additional charges.
The coffee place aims to educate people about coffee and you will find charts on the wall that highlight the difference between various coffee types such as Mocha, Espresso, Latte, Cappuccino and Macchiato. You can order hot or cold, depending on preference.
Coffee Wagera has a menu that primarily revolves around the hot beverage and we can surely say that you will not be disappointed with it. This coffee shop serves such finely brewed coffee that it will please everyone, even those who are not regular coffee drinkers.
With flavors like Hazelnut, Vanilla, Butterscotch and Caramel, this is one staple drink that should not be missed.
Mush tells us that he aims to help franchising entrepreneurs who want to expand, which is why the food items available here have been sourced from home-based businesses. These vendors are small-scale female entrepreneurs who now have a platform to sell their items. It is actually a great initiative for aspiring women in the industry (Girl Power All the Way!).
Egg and Spinach
From the first bite, you will experience a burst of cheesy goodness combined with a hint of spinach. This sandwich makes for an ideal breakfast with a hot, steaming coffee to go with.
Beef Chapli Kabab
The highlight of this sandwich is the chapli kabab and chutney (another special). However, the meaty flavor could be slightly strong for a few people.
Both the sandwiches are made from brown bread, which means that you won’t be compromising on your diet or health routine. All the more reason to try them out!
The chocolate fudge brownie at Coffee Wagera is a must try. It comes piping hot and topped with syrup (you won’t be able to resist!). They have just recently brought in lemon cakes as well which work very well as a sideline with coffee.
If you do not feel like opting for any of the sandwiches, you can go for a light lunch by choosing the Roti Roll available from noon onwards. It is incredibly light, with the masala chicken made in well-balanced spices that do not clash with your coffee, tea or juice. Yes, you have the option of a special tea and even iced tea. The coffee shop also serves fresh juices made with seasonal fruits, which are surely going to be great during the sweltering Karachi summers!
Apart from this, there is hot and cold chocolate available as well. It might be for non-coffee drinkers but if you are looking to try something different, this could be another choice.
Why it’s Different?
The coffee shop is unlike most eateries since it focuses mainly on serving good coffee to customers and does not have a heavy food-centric menu. As Mush emphasized, ‘this is a coffee place and not exactly a restaurant’. The customers are provided with top-notch services such as uninterrupted Wi-Fi (there are three different ones) and power supply plugs at the workstations. You can sit at this place for hours and work in peace.
Timings: 8 a.m. to Midnight.
Price Range: All items are under Rs. 200 (Sounds too good to be true? Check it for yourself!)
A Good Cause
Coffee Wagera is closely associated with SOP (Special Olympics Pakistan) and donates a part of the profit to the organization. The management also wants to provide employment opportunities to transgender persons and cognitively impaired persons as well.
