Scarlett Johansson Withdraws From Trans Role After Backlash
The Avengers superstar, Scarlett Johansson recently accepted the role in the upcoming movie Rub and Thug and found herself in a major controversy.
Scarlett was to play the character of a Dante “Tex” Gill, a trans man who owned numerous massage parlors in the 1970s and ’80s for the movie. Being a CIS woman, the star was greatly criticized for being unfit for the role. The LGBT community raised their voice on social media and shamed Johansson for being selfish and promoting discrimination against trans individuals in the entertainment industry.
Initially, the actress responded to the social media outrage by asking people to direct their opinions towards other actors who have played trans roles. However, the absurd justification met with even more backlash, forcing Scarlett to finally make the required decision.
In the latest statement released by Johansson, it has been known that she is stepping down from the role. The statement read, “While I would have loved the opportunity to bring Dante’s story and transition to life, I understand why many feel he should be portrayed by a transgender person, and I am thankful that this casting debate, albeit controversial, has sparked a larger conversation about diversity and representation in film.” The star also felt that taking up the role would insensitive and said,”I’ve learned a lot from the community since making my first statement.”
Well, one thing we’re sure Scarlett must have learned is the power of social media! Meanwhile, we appreciate her for taking the right decision. Better late than never.
