All About Acne

By: Dr Saadiya waqas (Consultant Dermatologist)

My worst nightmare as a teenager was a big yucky pimple suddenly appearing on my cheeks…..and there is a party on weekend. It used to take ages to disappear.
While growing up heard soooo many myths attached to it like stomach upset, chocolates, pickles and drinking coffee… might be true to a certain extent. But Acne is a dermatological condition which needs to be addressed the same way like any other disease.
Acne? Blackheads? Whiteheads? What do we actually mean by these terms?
Acne is a skin condition that occurs when your hair follicles become plugged with oil and dead skin cells. It usually appears on face, forehead, chest, upper back and shoulders. Depending on its severity acne can cause emotional distress and scar the skin. The earlier you start treatment, the lower your risk of such problems.

Different types depending on severity

• White heads…closed plugged pores
• Blackheads…open plugged pores
• Small red tender bumps
• Pimple/pustules…has pus on their tips
• Cysts…painful pus filled lumps

For many, acne can persists for decades, with flares common a week before menstruation. This type of acne tends to clear up without treatment in women who use contraceptives.

Four main factors causing acne

• Excess oil production
• Hair follicles clogged by oil and dead skin cells
• Bacteria
• Excess activity of a type of hormone

Consult dermatologist so they can help controlling acne and avoid scarring or other damage to your skin. Above all make scars less noticeable!

The current state of your skin does not measure your worth or your beauty, so remind yourself that it’s okay not to be perfect!
