Pinwheel Architects is spun by co-founders Faheem Abrar and Unaizah Syed, who are creative partners in their firm as well as in life. Both graduated from Indus Valley School of Art and Architecture with degree in B.Arch. The couple was kind enough to sit down and answer a few of our questions regarding their style, design, and even a little something about their personal life. Read ahead for an exclusive interview.
Q) You both left corporate firms for your private practice? How has that turned out?
A: It was a risk, of course, but we realised that the creative liberty that ones private practice offers is unlike any other. Besides, we are both young and understood that this is the right time to take the leap of faith. Honestly, the initial few months were tough, but by God’s grace, with each project we have earned more respect and reliability in the market thereby expanding our clientele. Thus far we have designed multiple amazing projects which you can see on our social media.
Q) When designing a room what is the most important factor to focus on?
A: We always say that any space is made up of the tangible and the intangible. The tangible, is everything from air and light quality, contrasts and
colors, textures and materiality, furniture and fixtures etc., all of which give birth to the intangible: the emotion that that place resonates. Hence there isn’t one specific element, in our opinion, that takes priority over the others, it’s more an amalgamation of various elements, identifying the user of the space and allowing the space to have both utility and meaning.
Q) Both your thesis projects are very social centric. What role do you think architecture plays in our society?
A: Ideally, architecture is a response to the society and its needs. But in our context the general opinion is that architects or interior designers are a luxury that not everyone can afford. However, this is a misconception. There are many budding firms, such as our own, that don’t cost the client an arm and a leg while also staying true to the design and construction quality.
Q) What are the unique key factors your company has to offer?
A: Pinwheel Architects is a platform harboring creative individuals whose expertise isn’t just architecture but also interior and product design. We are a young lot who isn’t afraid of trying unique and avant garde ideas. On top of that, we are a one-window solution: our expert team carries out our fantastical designs into wonderful reality with great precision. But above all, I’d say we are very passionate about our work, and problem-solving is what we do best!
Q) How do you balance your personal and professional lives being co-founders of the same firm?
A: Of course being married to your associate has its ups and downs. It is great in some ways since we get to spend quality time with each other doing what we enjoy: design, travel, attend meetings, carry site visits together. We also try and maintain a strict no-work-talk-after-8pm rule, which we are horrible at following. The best thing though, is that our strengths are different. Faheem is the more practical counterpart and Unaizah is the one with weirdly imaginative ideas, so we keep each other grounded.
Q) Do you have any message for upcoming designers?
A: Stay true to your inner voice, be original and stand up for what you believe in. There is no “right or wrong” in architecture, it is your own creative calling so create fearlessly!
